Mustang Horses are not endangered. There are about 30,000-45,000 wild horses in the western states (Nevada, Oregon, California, Wyoming, and Montana). It's difficult to get proper figures due to the remoteness and rugged nature of the land where Mustangs live. In the mountains the Mustang population is controlled by mountain lions, but on the plains predators do not bother these horses. Thus, the problem of overpopulation on the plains occurs until competition for available forage become strenuous.

When there is plenty of water and forage, the horses stay healthy. But, when their condition becomes poorer, they are less capable of surviving and breeding. When a drought comes along, many Mustang Horses die from the lack of water. To provide the outlet for excess numbers of Mustangs, there exists an adoption program. The determination of what is excess is imperfect as well as is the gathering process, but it's the most effective measure to control overpopulation. Another population control measure is contraceptive inoculation. This type of fertility control prevents pregnancy for at least a year. This method is rather expensive and time intensive.

Mustang Horses - Rescue

Many times Mustangs are abandoned because the owners don't know how to deal with them or lose interest. Rescue organizations have to pick up an unwanted Mustang horse and find a suitable new home for them. Sometimes, when the rescue animal is severely undernourished, ill, or has been physically mistreated, rehabilitation takes a long time, costs a lot, and has no guarantee that the animal will be adopted. For such cases sanctuaries are necessary. If you don't want more Mustang Horses to be abandoned and unhappy, think twice before buying Mustangs.
